Troubleshooting
The right DCC-EX power supply depends on your scale, current draw and command station hardware. For many OO and HO layouts, a regulated 15V 5A DC power supply is a practical starting point for compatible DCC-EX systems.
Voltage by scale
- N gauge layouts commonly use around 12V to 14V DC.
- OO and HO layouts commonly use around 14V to 16V DC.
- Larger scales may need higher current and careful hardware checking.
Current matters as much as voltage
A command station needs enough current for the locomotives and accessories running at the same time. More current capacity does not force extra current into a layout, but the supply and command station still need suitable protection and stable voltage.
